A partir de quel moment évoquer l'importance que les Groovies ont eue dans ma vie ? Hé bien, j'avais 12 ans quand j'ai entendu "Slow death" pour la première fois, et pour moi, c'est le morceau qui a tout mis en route en me donnant l'envie de m'enmparer d'une guitare. D'autres ont eu leur révélation en découvrant Elvis ou en voyant les Beatles chez Ed Sullivan, pour moi ce furent les Flamin Groovies. "Slow death" avait tout, depuis sont riff assassin jusqu'aux textes sombres évoquant un monde dangereusement attrayant et une attitude qui hurlait ROCK'N'ROLL... A partir de là, chaque groupe auquel j'ai participé a joué "Slow Death" et, à ma connaissance, je n'ai jamais donné un set en public sans que la chanson n'y figure. J'étais accro et dès cet instant, j'ai suivi les Groovies d'aussi près que possible. Le groupe parfait. Quoi que ça ait été un choc quand ils sont devenus Beatles, "You tore me down" et les morceaux plus mélodiques qui ont suivi résonnaient avec autant de force que leur répertoire du début. Ce fut particulièrement le cas pour "Shake some action" qui peut être considéré comme leur chef d'oeuvre, et un véritable opus rock'n'roll. Ca avait assez de puissance pour déraciner les branlettes hippy/prog prévalant à l'époque et en faire de l'inapproprié bon pour la poubelle. Addition faite de leur élégance vestimentaire, de leurs choix de guitares (Gretch/Rickenbaker douze cordes et Dan Amstrong), vous étiez sûr de pouvoir compte sur ce groupe votre vie durant. Vous saviez qu'ils seraient toujours cool et ne vous laisseraient jamais tomber. J'ai finalement vu les Flamin Groovies en 76 et leur performance m'a fait l'effet d'un tsunami. Ils ont joué aussi fort qu'un groupe de Heavy metal avec ce choix de reprises bien à eux. Entendre des chansons comme "Lady Friend" jouées avec tant de puissance, d'élégance et de technologie (avec douze cordes en stéréo) a soulevé le toit, juxtaposant la philosophie des sixties au moment présent. C'était la pièce finale du puzzle et quand j'ai formé les Barracudas, tout ce que je voulais c'étati un jour sonner à moitié aussi bien que les Groovies en public. Mais nous en étions simplement à apprêter nos coups et il a fallu un moment pour seulement approcher leur grandeur. Avoi Chris avec nous a été comme un rêve devenu réalité. Nous éprouvions une crainte mêlée de respect et il fallait nous pincer pour croire qu'un Groovie en chair et en os était avec nous sur scène et en studio. Nous avons appris beaucoup par osmose. L'apothéose, ce fut l'association avec Roy Loney, le parfait gentleman. Nous avions deux Groovies sur scène avec le groupe. C'est la preuve que les rêves d'enfant peuvent devenir réalité, et je suis très fier que les Barracudas figurent en note de bas de page dans la sage des Flamin Groovies. Well, I was 12 years old when I heard "Slow Death" the fist time and it was the song that got the whole ball rolling as far as I was concerned and made me to pick up a guitar for the fist time. Other people may have their epiphany when fist hearing Elvis or seeing The Beatles on Ed Sullivan, but for me it was The Flamin'Groovies. "Slow Death" had everythinig from its killer riff to the dark lyrics which evoked a dangerous yet inviting world ans an attitude that scramed ROCK'N'ROLL... From then on every band I played with incorporated Slow Death and I have never knowingly played a set live without featuring this song. I was hooked and from then on followed the Groovies as closely as I could. They were the perfect band.Although it was a shock when they went "Beatles" but "You tore me down" an the more melodic tunes they came up with still resonated as strongly as the earlier material. This was particularly true about Shake some Action which can be regarded as their masterpiece and a true rock'n'roll opus. It had enough power to uproot the prog/hippy wankfests prevalent at the time ans discard them into the dustbin of irrelevance. Once you mixed in their sartorial elegance, their choice of guitars - Gretch/12 strings Rickenbacker ans Dan Amstrong - you knew you could trust this bans with your life. You knew they wold always be cool ans would never let you down. Il finally got to see the Groovies in '76 and their performance was a vitual tsunami. They played as loud as a Heavy metal banc and here the choice of covers came into their own. Hearing sonts like Lady Friend played with such power, elegance ans technology (with stereo 12 strings !) raised the roof and adapted the 60s ethos to the present day. This was the final piece of the puzzle ans when I formed The Barracudas all I wanted was to one day sound half as good as The Groovies did live, but we were still learning our chops ans it took a while to even approach their greatness. Having Chris join us was a dream come true. We are in awe and had to pinch ourselves to remind us that we had a live Groovie with us on stade and in the studio. We just learned so much by osmosis. The apotheosis was the hooking up with Roy Loney (the perfect gentleman) and having two Groovies on stage at the same time with my band.
